MD State Highway Project on the Broadneck

The Maryland State Highway administration is responsible for the management of the infrastructure and land on the right-of-ways of our major roads. There are currently several projects on the Broadneck.

First, the state will be planting 8,700 trees in Anne Arundel County to help Bay restoration efforts. A small portion of this number is going up at the west bound Rt. 50 on ramp at the Cape St. Claire interchange, this year.

Second, there is a continuing struggle to maintain infrastructure. Lately this has been an ongoing battle to fix and upgrade the lighting on major roads. If you see any streetlights out in your travels in this area send an email directly to Hilary, our DOT Community Liaison for District 5 at [email protected]. Hilary writes us:

“A quick update on lighting in District 5 (Anne Arundel, Calvert St Mary’s and Charles County)  – Our infrastructure needs seem to be outpacing our resources and budget to maintain them properly.  We currently have on on-going Capital construction project on US 50 that is focused on improving lighting along that corridor near Annapolis.  In addition to this Capital project, I am aware of at least 76 active locations with maintenance lighting issues.  We currently have 2 full-time crews working between 6 to 8 locations at any one time to address these lighting issues.  We will keep at it!”
