BCC Members –From the President:
The BCC is announcing a General Meeting of the Broadneck Council to introduce Jim Ports, the Executive Director of the MDTA, at 6:30pm on 9/23/21 to discuss our serious Bay Bridge traffic problems. This meeting will be held in the Cape St. Claire Clubhouse.
FACTS: The ongoing summer traffic crush,-burdening both E/B and W/B Bay Bridge travelers, is unacceptable to all Bay crossing citizens but in particular to the residents of the Broadneck Peninsula who must also contend with the Sandy Point State Park traffic on E.College Parkway. To note: Emergency Vehicles are blocked by beach traffic from servicing those who live east of the Cape St Claire/Rte #50/301 interchange leaving thousands of residents at risk.
We are now faced with the potential of having a 3rd Bay Bridge added to the existing 2 spans on our overwhelmed Broadneck Peninsula. The selection of our Broadneck corridor for an additional Bridge was the MDTA recommendation announced in the NEPA -National Environmental Policy Act/Tier 1 DEIS -Draft Environmental Impact Study of 2015. The 3rd span is proposed to expedite increased traffic volumes drawn to our Peninsula. In response, AAC Citizens demand that there must be another Bay Crossing located outside AA County either north or south of our Broadneck corridor to disburse and balance the increased traffic load projected for this geography. Broadneck Council members reject the additional Bridge on this Peninsula and will fight every effort to construct this new span. We strongly oppose Governor Hogan’s support of a 3rd Bridge on this Peninsula.
The BCC will host a -General Meeting- dedicated to Bay Bridge issues and request that you MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR 6:30PM ON THURSDAY EVENING, 9/23/21 AT THE CAPE ST. CLAIRE CLUBHOUSE TO HEAR –MDOT/MDTA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR- JIM PORTS, SPEAK (live!) ON THE BAY BRIDGE PROBLEMS AND PROPOSED SOLUTIONS.
Jim will present the current status of the NEPA/DEIS & FEIS studies update us on improved travel across this corridor. Also, a Q&A session is scheduled. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear about the future of these Bridges and our Broadneck corridor. Our Elected Officials are invited to attend. Our District#5 Councilwoman, Amanda Fiedler will be on our agenda.

*All AA County mandated COVID pandemic precautions will be observed during our BCC 9/23/21 General Meeting, so please bring a mask as we will be inside in a crowded room for this event. Also, stay tuned to any BCC announcements as the meeting will be converted to a ZOOM call if inside meetings are restricted due to new COVID infection reports.
The GDP/Plan 2040 activity will begin after the Regional Stakeholders’ Advisory Committees (SAC’s) are named. Region #4 is in the first group to participate in this next phase.
The Broadneck Peninsula has been well represented by the BCC on the BBRAG (Bay Bridge Reconstruction Advisory Group) by Barbara Hitchings, BCC Secretary and Vice Chair of the BBRAG and Pat Lynch, both having served for over ten years. The Broadneck was represented by Pat Lynch-BCC President, on the Citizens’ Advisory Committee (CAC) for the GDP/Plan 2040.
The Arnold Farm on Freshfield Lane off of Shore Acres Road at the College Parkway intersection, is under consideration for a cluster development of (est) 37 single family and town home units on 7 acres of an 11 acre parcel. We are told no purchase contract has been signed with the developer. The area is the historic resting place of John Arnold. The BCC is working with the Magothy River Association to present alternative options to the landowners to preserve this property for a publically owned historic park dedicated to Arnold and the five slaves who are buried on this property.
Broadneck Trail Update: Please visit www.annearundeltrailnetwork.org to learn more about how the Broadneck Peninsula Trail fits into a vision for an interconnected trail network in the County. This project is being managed by BCC Director Phil Ferrara.
Destiny Circle: The BCC has engaged AAC Traffic Engineer, Nestor Flores,who has designed new road signs for Destiny Circle, to facilitate and safeguard the crossing of pedestrians across College Parkway toward/from Broadneck Park. There will be additional caution signs to alert drivers to the presence of pedestrians at this intersection. The upgrades are planned for an early fall installation.
Pleasant Plains Road: Thanks to BCC Director John Joynes, a traffic light is planned- for the area near the corner of Old Mill Bottom and St Margaret’s roads to safeguard travelers driving through this dangerous and extended intersection– where Pleasant Plains Rd and St Margaret’s traffic converges. Other traffic signs will be added to Pleasant Plains Rd. at the sharp curves in the roadway where numerous accidents have occurred.
