BCC – Winter President’s Message

BROADNECK COUNCIL OF COMMUNITIES

FROM THE PRESIDENT
The BCC welcomes in the New Year and invites all advocates to join us in making Anne Arundel County a better place with a sustained and protected quality of life! Our focus areas include overdevelopment, crowded roadways, stormwater pollution, forest decline and environmental degradation.

2022 CHALLENGES:
1) The Freshfield development off Shore Acres Rd and College Parkway (CP) in Arnold is the planned site where 37 Cluster Development homes will be constructed on 7+ acres-of an 11+ acre farm property. This new development will add more vehicles to Shore Acres Rd and contribute to saturating this dangerous CP intersection during business/seasonal travel hours.

2) Another Broadneck property concern is the 300 acre Holly Beach Farm south of the Bay Bridge, off the Skidmore Drive service road. Our AA County Executive is promoting the transfer of this property, an environmental and educational asset, to the National Park Trust for both water access and possible ferry service to Kent Island. This Farm is covered by a highly restrictive conservation easement and managed under the deed ownership of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. The County is interested in transferring the deed to the National Park Trust and opening the land as a Park service to national visitors. The additional vehicles will contribute to an increase in traffic overload-on the John Hansen Highway and service roads in summer months. Improved MDTA/SHA traffic management is critical to vehicle movement throughout our Peninsula and must work to keep Rte #50/301 travelers off our service roads so residents can reach their homes.

OUR TRAFFIC FUTURE
The BCC announces a General Members’ Meeting with guest speaker, MDOT/SHA Chief Administrator-Tim Smith, on Thursday, 2/24/22 at 6:30pm at the Cape St. Claire Clubhouse. Possible solutions to seasonal Rt. #50/301 highway traffic on Broadneck service roads and the projected 3rd Bay Bridge plans will be discussed. Our elected officials are invited to attend.
